H2-Share: reducing emissions for heavy-duty transport
H2-Share (Hydrogen Solutions for Heavy-duty transport Aimed at Reduction of Emissions in North West Europe) aims to build and test a 27-ton rigid truck fuelled by hydrogen with a mobile H2 refueler. The truck will be tested at six different locations in Northwest Europe (Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and France) to gain practical experience. The first demo will take place in the Eindhoven-region in the autumn of 2019.
The project will demonstrate the readiness of hydrogen technology for heavy-duty applications in real life conditions. The goal of H2-Share is to facilitate knowledge sharing between regions and wider implementation of transnational low-carbon transport solutions. H2-Share will also develop a joint roadmap for North-West Europe.
Hydrogen technology and zero-emission logistics
In the EU, the logistics sector contributes to 25% of the total transport sector CO2 emissions. While battery electric trucks can operate efficiently in urban areas, hydrogen technology has an important role to play in zero-emission logistics over longer distances. Heavy-duty vehicles with a fuel cell range extender have a large potential, but are not yet commercially available in the EU. Opening this market would contribute to green transport solutions by reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. The demonstrations will create visibility, joint experiences and public awareness of hydrogen solutions in heavy-duty transport.
