China soil projects Phase 2
Project Objective
This project is directly connected to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Environment (with annexes on Soil and Waste Management), signed in November 2008 by Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment Dr J. Cramer and her Chinese counterpart Mr Zhou Shengxian from the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP). Besides MEP, the leading research academies CRAES (the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Beijing) and NIES (the Nanjing Institute for Environmental Sciences, Nanjing) are parties in the cooperation.
Phase 2
In-depth training of representatives from Environmental Protection Bureaus (EPBs) and their associated Environmental Science Research Institutes from Shanxi and Guizhou provinces and Changzhou city. The training was conducted using site-remediation demonstration projects. The training included tests of Chinese risk assessment instruments against real life situations.
Project Activities
- 2011:
November - Inception mission to 3 provinces. Demonstration sites visited, training needs assessed, joint agreement on 2012 programme. - 2012:
March - Training/demonstration module 1, China.
June - Study trip to the Netherlands.
October - Training/demonstration module 2, China.

Phase 2 was concluded with a final conference in Beijing in December 2012. During the conference, each EPB presented its case and the lessons learned were discussed. This conference was the formal conclusion of the project. The project was carried out in the presence of representatives from MEP, CRAES and NIES. This ensured that the MoU objectives were achieved at government level.
Note: the training and demonstration programme was conducted with representatives from Soil+, DCMR, NIES and Dutch companies (TAUW, Witteveen & Bos, Eijkelkamp).
Project duration
The project duration: 2011 - 2012.
