Final Conference CityChlor, May 16-17, 2013 Ghent

In the CityChlor project 9 partners from 4 European regions worked together to develop an integrated approach for pollution with chlorinated solvents in urban environments. The partners presented the results at the final conference on May 16 and 17 2013 in Ghent, Belgium.

The morning of the first day showed how our international cooperation lead to innovative solutions. Although every region has it's own legislation and background, cooperation brought new insights and ideas. Luca Marmo, of the European commision, Environment Directorate-General was one of our speakers.

In the afternoon of the first day 3 parallel sessions targeted specific audiences. Technical sessions on techniques for characterization and remediation addressed environmental experts. Urban planners, policymakers and city representatives were invited to the session on communication and economical aspects.

The second day focused on the integration of different disciplines. Case studies showed how different disciplines are integrated in one approach. A panel with leading persons discussed the necessity of changes in practice and policy. In the afternoon of the second day a site visit could be made to the ongoing remediation of the Waalse Krook site, a textbook case of integrated approach.
